Growling Tummies Meet Messy Bessie: 26 June 2014, Thursday

It’s so tempting to be lazy in the morning when it’s dark and raining outside. After laying about for a while and reading this and that, Lena decided to take a walk while I stayed in and did some reading and brainstorming for my family history class. Meanwhile, Lara slept peacefully. When Lara awoke we played a few games of golf and had a royal dinner (lunch) of macaroni and cheese, which cost us only $1.10 or so, with a very bare green salad before heading out to Charlottetown.

Knowing that it would be another rainy day, we planned to visit Charlottetown and spend some time poking around as many cute shops and places around town as we could. The old town has a certain charm to it, with its old-fashioned buildings and some cobblestone streets where the traffic is blocked off. We thoroughly enjoyed wandering up and down Victoria Row, traipsing through the little shops, where we explored what seemed to be an unending amount of trinkets and doodads designed to catch the eye of both tourists and locals alike.

Note: I personally feel that after this day I was cured of any need or desire to enter another gift shop in P.E.I.

When I say we thoroughly enjoyed our browsings in these shops, I do mean that they were very attractive and interesting, but I also must tell you that we were all starving to death in our wanderings, although we had just eaten our mac'n'cheese dinner (lunch) about an hour previously. We all suffered in silence for some time before one of us finally mentioned something about food, and that was when we discovered that our hunger pangs were mutual. Those cheesy noodles did not satisfy, no, not a one of us.

We soon headed back to the car, where we appeased our growling bellies with some tasty Triscuits and cheese as we headed off to sample Canada’s best ice cream—Cows ice cream. Ever heard of it? We went especially to their factory to get a tour but were very sad to find we had arrived after the allotted touring time was over. On the bright side, we still got to eat ice cream. And it was heavenly. Among some of the flavors we tried were Mooey Gooey, Wowie Cowie, Messy Bessie. Need I say more? Yumm.

The day was complete with a stop at Gillis’s Drive Inn. We ordered two extra servings of fish, unsuspecting of the rather large size of the fish. You can see that they are quite ginormous, and they were by far the best fish and chips we had on P.E.I.

Just when we thought the day couldn't get any better, or could not be finished in a more satisfying way, we remembered Tim Horton's and were overcome with temptation. It was an easy decision and did not take long to make. We rationalized that we would only be able to get Tim Horton's for such a short time and we had better indulge while the opportunity lasted. Tim's (we were soon on a first-name basis with the place) is a popular coffee and donut store in Canada. We have been seeing them literally everywhere we have been on P.E.I. We have shamelessly enjoyed donuts and "tim bits" (donut holes) from this place almost daily since we arrived and have found that it is also quite the hangout for the older folks in town, especially in the mornings. Oh, we are now on a personal basis with Timmy's—after we learned from a local in one of those doodad shops that you can be.
